Winchester Cathedral – Presbytery Roof Bosses

Listing Status:  Grade 1

NCA worked with McNeilage Conservation and Hugh Harrison to assess the scope of work for the decorative bosses to the underside of the Presbytery Vault. The decorative bosses were in a poor condition and had been concealed by a layer of white paint. Following the project receiving a HLF Stage 1 pass in May 2012, NCA worked with McNeilage Conservation to carry out a programme of repair and conservation which involved the careful removal of the 1950’s white paint and conservation of the early 16th Century paint. The works also involves a programme of repair to the timber boards behind.

The lead roof over the presbytery was taken off, recast and relaid. A substantial temporary roof was craned into place to facilitate the works.
