Wells Cathedral – North Nave Aisle Roof
Re-roofing of North Nave Aisle
NCA compiled tender drawings and acted as Contract Administrator throughout construction. The works involved removal of the existing lead sheets, liaising with the Structural Engineer in regard to timber repairs to the roof structure, and introduction of new lead sheets to the roof area and gutter linings. The current upstand to the gutter did not comply with current LSA guidance and as such, the levels of the gutter had to be reviewed and inset stones introduced to the rear face of the parapet. The existing access for maintenance to the area directly behind the West Front had previously been hazardous and the scope of works aimed to improve this through the introduction of lead steps.
The roof void below reroofing works forms part of the visitor route for guided tours within the Cathedral. Part of the works involved the introduction of a timber handrail around an area of the exposed vaulted ceiling.
Sitting directly adjacent to the Nave, the works had to be carefully managed particularly in the interests of health and safety to the public.
