Projects - Scheduled Monument
Magdalen Tower, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes
Listing status: Grade II*, Scheduled Monument
Scope of works: Masonry Repairs, Re-roofing
Client: Milton Keynes Council
Magdalen Tower is all that remains of the 13th Century church that was destroyed by fire in the late 18th Century. NCA were appointed to put together the tender package for masonry repairs and re-roofing of the Scheduled Monument. NCA then acted as Contract Administrator throughout construction works.
The site is surrounded by a graveyard, also included within the Scheduled Monument listing, and in close proximity of residential units and the busy High Street of Stony Stratford. Vehicular access was limited and the works had to be carefully managed with the various constraints and protection of the historic fabric in mind.
The stone repairs had to be finely judged in view of the very fragile condition of the stone. The parapets were in very poor condition requiring partial dismantling and rebuilding. The roof had failed completely and was repaired and provided with a new lead covering.
